Nitrous Oxide
Safe for children and adults, nitrous oxide (laughing gas) keeps you awake but relaxed. It wears off quickly, so you can return to your day with ease.
Oral Sedation
Taken as a pill, oral sedation creates deeper relaxation. You’ll stay conscious but may feel drowsy and remember little of your visit. A driver is required.
Moderate IV Sedation
Ideal for surgical procedures such as wisdom teeth extractions, moderate IV sedation allows for a deeper level of relaxation while keeping you conscious and responsive.
Aftercare
Sedation effects wear off at different times, so plan to take it easy after your appointment. Arrange for someone to drive you home, and give yourself time to relax.

Which type of sedation is right for me?

Nitrous oxide is best if you want to relax but still be awake and able to drive yourself home afterward. It’s ideal for mild anxiety or shorter procedures. We’ll often recommend oral sedation if you have moderate to severe dental anxiety or need a longer or more complex procedure. It provides a deeper sense of calm, but you’ll need someone to drive you to and from your appointment. Our Oakville sedation dentists will review your health history, preferences, and treatment plan to help you choose the safest and most comfortable option.
Can I eat before sedation?

For oral sedation, you’ll need to avoid food and drink (except small sips of water) for at least 6 hours before your appointment. This ensures the medicine works properly and reduces risks during your procedure. If you’re receiving nitrous oxide sedation, you don’t need to fast, but we recommend a light meal a few hours before your visit. Avoid heavy or greasy foods that might upset your stomach.
How quickly does sedation take effect?

Sedation generally takes effect quickly. Oral sedation usually takes 30–60 minutes to reach full effect, so you’ll take it before your appointment begins. With nitrous oxide (laughing gas), the calming effects start within a few minutes of breathing it in and wear off just as quickly once the mask is removed.
